I was encouraged to submit additional art pieces in the “Self Portrait” exhibit at the MCL Grand Theater in Lewisville. It took me awhile to come up with my first submission, “Iterations”. Coming up with additional pieces seemed daunting. But I have a saying: if you’re handed a piece of meat are you going to cook it? Translation: if you’re given an opportunity are you going to take advantage of it or let it go to waste?
I’m not only going to cook it, I’ll make multiple meals out of it!
While I take a literal approach to themes, I decided to apply a loose interpretation this time. You’ll understand why when you see the first photo.
Iterations 2: Anything you can do, I can do better
I adapted the set from my first photo, “Iterations”. I used my ventriloquist’s doll, Percival Sunshine, as the model. Judging by the photo you might conclude I have a carnival funhouse of props. It does appear that way! My favorite element in the photo is the doll leg, with the hand drawn polka dot sock.
I chose the subtitle, “Anything you can do, I can do better” because Percy felt his modeling skills were superior to mine.
A Walk in the Park with My Friend Butter
A few years ago I went to the park in search of subjects to photograph. A butterfly landed on my back side. Then it moved to my hand. “Butter” and I walked around the park for a good distance, in fact, it was long enough for me to play “Build me up buttercup”. It was the most unusual experience to have this delicate creature on my hand. I snapped as many photos as I could and so did my friend Tore. In total, she was on me for 48 minutes.
The photo symbolizes the need to actively seek out opportunities. Don’t just wait for something to come or happen. Go out and explore. And when things do happen – seize upon them!
The VAL is an opportunity I discovered and I’m excited to actively participate in. You can do the same!

An Eruption of Enthusiasm
I can be low key and introverted. But I can also be very enthusiastic about subjects of interest. My friends know when the fingers and hands are flying, it means I am excited. And what’s more, the enthusiasm will suck you in and before you know it, you’re sold on whatever I’m excited about.
The photo seemed appropriate given I’m gung-ho about joining the VAL, entering my first exhibition and hopefully I’m encouraging others to join a similar organization in their area.
Go see the art pieces in person. There are multiple exhibits going on to make your trip worthwhile. Everything is free, including the parking.
Each of the photos are for sale. Percival has high hopes his photograph will be the first to sell. Also, be sure to follow Percival on Instagram for more of his artistic endeavors and mischievous adventures.
