My latest creation is on display in the Small Works Exhibition at the Lewisville Grand Theater. The exhibition is presented by the Visual Art League of Lewisville.

Details

I place a great deal of value on selecting the materials for my artwork. The background for the cardboard cockroach is vintage wallpaper that I purchased at an estate sale in historic downtown McKinney in 2023. The home featured wallpaper with a variety of patterns covering both the walls and ceilings. Here’s a snapshot of one of the ceilings.

The frame was a gift from my friend Sharon Jenkins Haltom. It plays an integral role in the overall tone of the artwork, giving it a Victorian feel and elevating my cardboard cockroach into something resembling a cameo—or perhaps a tribute to a creature most people would rather forget.

While photographing the artwork on the evening the submission was due, I dropped it, breaking the frame. I remained calm, repaired the damage, and found a dried flower to camouflage the crack. The flower was among the keepsakes I saved from a recent hospital visit. (Yes, I save everything—and this artwork proves why!)
