When was the last time you admired a weed? Never?

This photo was taken at the Ft. Worth Botanic Gardens.  Now before you conclude they don’t maintain the place let me explain.  They have many areas with well groomed gardens, trial gardens and water features.  There is also an area that is more ‘natural’ and covered with trees, a worn out trail and yes, underbrush and an occasional dandelion. To get this shot, I had to get down on my knees to get a better view.  Even though it’s a weed I think it turned out quite nice. It’s just a pretty beetle.

I had planned on taking the easy way out with this photo.  The original title was going to be Beetle.  But I felt guilty for being lazy so I did a Google and Wikipedia search.  This is a Cottonwood Borer. It is a wood borer—it uses trees as its host to lay eggs.  It takes two years for the larvae to mature.  The larvae pupate and once metamorphosis happens, they eat their way out of the tree.
