Romelia C. Lopez passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was 88 years old.
She was born on April 10, 1934 to Augustine and Encarnation Hener (Rico). She was the oldest of her 8 siblings.
Romelia moved to the United States when she was young, in pursuit of a better life. She married Bernardo Lopez and together they had 8 children: Manuel, Mario, Maria, Lucy, Guadalupe, Alfred, Carmen and Romelia.
Anyone who had the opportunity to spend time with Romelia couldn’t help but be impressed by her ability to keep track of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (The last count was 25 great grandchildren and 21 grandchildren). She loved them all and her home was always happiest when there were children running around the house.
She was ready to share the latest news about her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever someone would visit. She had a sweet laugh as she shared the antics of the little ones in the family. In hearing her stories, it was clear she loved and forgave unconditionally. Her home was covered in family photos and ephemera highlighting her family’s accomplishments over the years.
The kitchen was the heart of her home and it is where the familiar sound of a rolling pin could be heard as she made the best fresh flour tortillas in the morning. Paired with beans, there was no better meal. During the Christmas season, Romelia made the best biscochos (Mexican Wedding Cookies) – in fact, her recipe was the winning recipe when one of her grandchildren entered it into a contest.
Aside from being an excellent cook and baker, Romelia had a beautiful singing voice. Her brother composed a song for her to sing and record. Quite frequently, you could hear her singing throughout the house as she cleaned. She was also very artistic – she could draw, paint, sculpt and even sew like a tailor without any patterns.
Romelia was a devout Catholic and every night could be heard praying for her family and loved ones. She also took part in a prison outreach program where she spread the word of God, hope and forgiveness to inmates at a local facility in Las Cruces.
Romelia enjoyed independent living in the same home until a few years ago, when she moved to a nursing home.
Romelia Lopez touched the lives of so many as a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandma, great-grandma and friend. She is preceded in death by her parents, Augustine Hener and Encarnation Rico, her husband, Bernardo (1989), her daughter Romelia (2015), grandson, Mario (2019), sisters Luz Ramirez (2011) and Lupe Montoya and brother Antonio Rico.
May she Rest in Peace.
