Random Object Wednesday: I had no idea what I was photographing

Jeff Crump handed me a bag with a random object to photograph.

Jeff:  “I added a new battery.”

I took the bag home, prepared the studio and took the object out of the bag.

Denise:  “What did I get myself into?”

I knew Jeff made the item and it was impressive.  It has a power switch to turn lights on.

Over a hundred photos later I decided I had enough material.  I downloaded the photos but concluded I needed more photos….

Then I thought it would be a good idea to do some research.  If you’re a fan of Iron Man, then you already know what it is.  😉  It’s an Iron Man power source chest piece, of course!

The first two shots are with the Canon G11.

Pretty standard shot. I wanted to show multiple elements to this object—including the power supply and the green power switch.

This shot gives a better perspective of the object.

By this time I was ready to switch to Big Bertha—the Canon EOS 5D Mark II for some artistic shots.

I used a reflective poster board for this shot.  The shot reminds me of a kaleidoscope.

For this shot I used a shiny black poster board that I’ve never found useful until today!

Tips:
Although I didn’t know what I was photographing, I didn’t let that prevent me from doing my best.  In fact, not knowing what it was made it somewhat easier as I didn’t have any preconceived ideas on how to photograph the item.   When taking photos try to see things with a new, fresh perspective.  You may be surprised with the results.
