We were only going to stay an hour at the opening reception but time melted so quickly that we almost closed the show.
We started on one end of the Convergence Exhibition and planned to experience the entire show piece by piece. We would discover my collaborative artwork in due time.
We were 2-3 pieces into the exhibition when I turned and spotted a familiar face. Is that? Maybe? I took a chance and looked at her and said, “you are a stone carving instructor, right?” She looked at Tore and me and everything clicked. We are all used to seeing each other in stone carving and welding clothes. Being dressed up is a bit out of context.
Kat Warwick is the stone carving instructor at the Creative Arts Center in Dallas. Kat and her husband Jerry have a chair in the Convergence Exhibition. We recognized the chair from a recent chair exhibition at the Bath House Cultural Center. It was exciting to meet the artists behind the chair. What a small world!
Kat asked about my collaborative artwork and I looked across the room and spotted it. I pulled out a small teacup from my handbag (doesn’t everyone travel with a teacup in their handbag?) I explained the inspiration for the artwork was the teacup given to me by a friend. I highlighted the features Crystal Nelson added to the piece. Kat listened, looked at the artwork and then suggested I add the teacup to the top of the frame.

It was a brilliant idea.
The frame is especially wide, offering the perfect shelf for the teacup. We looked at the artwork and it felt right. I love how the artwork evolved to include the input of another artist while at the opening reception for a themed show called “Convergence.”

I tracked down the owner of the gallery, Andrea Lamarsaude, and explained I wanted to add a teacup to the piece. I applied “temporary” adhesive to secure the piece for the show. The piece is complete! (Note, if anyone does purchase the piece, I will permanently attach the teacup.)

Thank you, Art on Main and thMTHRship Gallery, Crystal Nelson and Kat Warwick for the opportunity to connect, create and be inspired. And of course, thank you, Sharon and Paul Haltom, for giving me the teacup and supporting me in my creative endeavors. P.S. I will dispel any rumors that I will continue to add to the artwork with each visit. Friends pointed out that an electrical outlet is conveniently under the piece. Perhaps a string of lights should be added. Just kidding. But it is a good idea…
