Mother and Child

Honorable Mention: Mother & Child

I have art on display through the Visual Art League of Lewisville at the Lewisville Grand Theater. This is the final weekend to see the artwork in person.

Exhibition: Patterns and Textures
Exhibition Dates: Aug 17 – Sept 14
Curated by: Deb Kreimborg and Valerie Corwin
Judge: Kathy Elliott
Location: 100 N. Charles St., Lewisville, TX

The exciting part about this exhibition is that I won an honorable mention! I was heartened the judge really “saw” my piece. And I was amused because until this exhibition, I hadn’t fully “seen” my own art piece. The shadows were an unexpected discovery!

Here is the description Kathy read during the reception:

“This sculpture sits quietly in the corner with its’ beautiful shadow behind it on the wall.

Emotion comes into play when you are looking at artwork, some artwork more than others but this one especially had much to delve into. At the same time, it fits the theme of this show, Patterns and Textures, not only visually but also metaphorically as we think about actual patterns in our lives as we grow, experience, and age.

Visually there are subtle patterns and textures in the metal and with the written words, “Remember Me”. These nuances continue to the dried flowers and butterfly wings with the subtle textured gold ribbon behind. The photograph of mother and child, slightly aged and lying outside the frame, gives light to stories we all know.

A poignant and beautiful piece!

Mother and Child

“Mother & Child” part of the Remember Me Series

Starting from the bottom up:

Baking Pan:

A repurposed baking pan from a friend in Van Alstyne serves as the base of the art piece.  It represents the kitchen, the heart of the home.  I imagine the mother in the photo baking for her family.

Spiral:

The spiral is made of chicken wire/wire netting covered in newspaper.  The linear texture mimics the wood siding on the home featured in the photo. It’s meant to look like materials that have been recovered from the home (that I assume is deteriorated or perhaps demolished).

Frame with ripped up handwritten “Remember Me” and photo popping out:

When we are born, we have the future ahead of us and it is full of opportunity.  At this starting point, I imagine the photo properly framed and in pristine condition.  But time marches on.  We grow, we age, and eventually the pristine photo becomes tattered as it fades, creases and eventually falls out of the frame.

We want so much to be remembered while on this earth (as suggested with the handwritten “Remember Me” in the frame).  But even this photo that was once treasured by someone, has no names, dates or locations on the back – nothing to denote who the people are, where they are from, etc.  Instead of being remembered, we are eventually forgotten.

But what we can hope for is the constancy of God and our passing from this earth to the next – represented by the butterfly that emerges from the frame.  The flowers are a tribute to the deceased but also an upward pathway to heaven.

The back of the photo does have text, but not very useful:  “Well kid, here’s the picture you’ve been wanting”  #555 $1.50.

Pine Cone / Moss on Baking Pan:

Meanwhile, time continues to wear on and the baking pan, the foundation that represents the home, returns to the earth.  It becomes taken in by the elements, represented by the moss/pinecone on the bottom left of the pan.

Visit the Lewisville Grand Theater to see the piece in person. It is available for exhibitions and for purchase. Contact me if you’re interested.

Join the Visual Art League of Lewisville and you too can have art on display. Annual membership is cheaper than a trip to a restaurant and considerably more fulfilling. Click here for details.
