I had an unexpected email in my inbox last Friday evening. I assumed it was just a reminder about the upcoming 24th Annual Art Connection Members Show at the Irving Arts Center.
I opened the email and I was so stunned I was moved to tears.
I called Tore and told him the news.
I occupied the rest of my time by considering what dress to wear on Sunday. This is our first time attending an opening reception at this venue. I want to make a positive impression.
We arrived and saw my friend and VAL president, Lisa Chittenden with her husband. We were like two schoolgirls – so excited to attend the event. She too had received an unexpected email on Friday evening. We spotted our artwork and took photos to capture the excitement of having artwork on display.

It’s always exciting to see strangers looking at my artwork.

The opening reception began. Unfortunately, the judge, Du Chau, was unable to attend but they read a prepared speech he had written.
They announced the awards.
Lisa received an Honorable Mention in the non-professional division for her artwork, Dreamscapes Vol. 2.
I received 3rd place in the non-professional division, for my work, Family Dynamics.

To have my work on display in this facility is exciting enough – but to be recognized and selected by Du Chau – I find myself at a loss for words. His artwork is captivating, delicate and imaginative – and he has such an impressive background. And he chose MY work to be recognized.
WOW.
Thank you, Irving Arts Center and Du Chau for this incredible honor. I often doubt my ability and question why I am making art. Thank you for the encouragement.

Everyone is invited to view the exhibition!

(Until Sunday, I hadn’t fully experienced my own artwork with all it’s shadows.)
