Artist’s Statement: So many lost, found and discarded items go unnoticed.  But I see opportunity, beauty and unfinished stories.

Street Life #2

About the Photo:

Tore Bellis and I were on our way to The French Room in downtown Dallas when I spotted this decapitated doll on the side of the road.  We made a note of the location and after our tea we returned.  Dressed in our finest, we carried our cameras to the location and assessed the situation.  There was another dismembered, less photogenic doll nearby. I happily took photos of the gruesome scene.  When I finished, I picked up an arm and a leg for future art supplies.

Given the lack of clothes, I doubt a child dropped the doll from a moving car.  Any parent would have found a way to retrieve the precious cargo for the grieving child who lost her “best friend”.  I suspect it was discarded or donated to charity where it eventually ended up in the care of a homeless person.  Life on the streets can be brutal, as we can see.

Meanwhile, my Cabbage Patch Dolls from the 1980s are lovingly stored away in a closet.  They will never know the harshness of life on the streets.

Celebrate the memory of this anonymous Cabbage Patch Doll by viewing the art at the Pilot Point Coffee House.

Exhibit dates:  August 4 – September 18th.   The framed photo is available for purchase on the spot.
