Not all that glitters

Not all that glitters

This is the last of my art pieces in the Botanicals exhibit through the Visual Art League of Lewisville.

Title: Not all that glitters

Not all that glitters

Artist’s Statement:  The piece centers around a message from an 1890s autograph book:  “Dearest Emma, the pleasures and beauties of life fade but the treasures we must cling to is [sic] the sweet promises of heaven. – M. Hollis”

There are two roses depicting the paths we can choose to take in life.  The pink rose was enticing but the rosebud fell off the stem.  The other path is on a golden ladder, reaching upright toward heaven. The ribbon represents the journey through life. The multi-colored blue canvas with texture represents the joys and bumps along the way in life.

Materials:

  • The photo of a stranger is from my Aunt Angie Holguin. I chose it to depict Emma from the autograph book page.
  • The dried roses and petals are donated by my friend Tom Cao, of Flowerama in Plano.
  • Autograph book page – this is a photograph of the original page from an autograph book. I shrunk the page to work for this art piece. I would not dream of destroying an 1890s autograph book or any of my treasured autograph books.
  • Additional items: wood, wire, ribbon, canvas

Exhibit Dates: May 20 – June 24, 2023

Location: Lewisville Grand Theater / 100 N. Charles St., Lewisville, TX
